Diagnostic Study

The Saudi Arabian Supreme Commission for Tourism (SCT) entrusted the German consultant company Compass GmbH, to carry out a Diagnostic Study on sustainable tourism issues. Deep-Scape was contracted by Compass to join the team of experts in Saudi Arabia and assist in carrying out following tasks:

  • identify and assess all threats and problems that relate to and affect directly the Kingdom’s coastal tourism industry
  • compile and evaluate international best practices to mitigate identified problems and maintain quality standards
  • assess adequacy of existing regulatory measures and facilities design to assure environmental health (i.e.: registration and licensing procedures for tourism providers, use zonation schemes, legislation, etc.)
  • assess the institutional and regulatory arrangements in respect to overlaps, deficiencies and gaps
  • recommend prioritised action by the SCT and other stakeholders
  • present prioritised issues and corresponding measures in the form of a Five-year Action Plan

Demonstration Project

Set-up of a demonstration project utilising Biorock Technology in Sambirenteng, Bali, Indonesia. This involved the whole range of construction and development measures. Monitoring and evaluation of results took place after a 12 months period and showed very positive results.

Reef Rehabilitation Program

Cooperation with NGOs and tourism enterprises involved in the reef restoration program `Karang Lestari` in Pemuteran Bay, Bali, Indonesia.

Planning and Visualisation

Design of an underwater nature trail and artificial reef for the Gayana Ecoressort, Sabah, Malaysia to enhance the ecological and economical value of the adjacent coastal area. A multimedia CD was created to demonstrate and visualize the different features and attractions of the nature trail. Other tasks included: coral growth monitoring, coral farm project set-up and development of outreach and awareness raising campaigns.

Visualization of an inovative technical solution and its possible applications to reduce negative environmental impacts of desalination plants in the United Arab Emirates and the Arabian Gulf.

Conceptualisation and design of an underwater theme park for visitors and residents of the The Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. A multimedia CD was produced as an integral part of Biorock’s proposal to Nakheel corporation who is foremost in developing Dubai as a tourism destination.

Awareness Raising Campaigns

Conceptualisation and design of a multimedia CD to be used as a tool in awareness raising campaigns by Lighthouse Foundation. The CD illustrates the main perceived problematic issues of tourism in coral reef areas and features a viable solution for their mitigation.

Environmental Management System

Draft of an environmental management system and underwater tourist park for the `Isla Mujeres National Park`, Mexico. A multimedia CD was produced featuring the different aspects of the underwater park and the land based facilities, thus giving an overview and impression of the project to all parties involved.
